Professor Liam Dolan

Professor Liam Dolan
Co-Director, Institute on Plants for the 21st Century

Professor Dolan's research interests focus on cellular development and evolution in land plants. He joins us from the John Innes Institute where he has been working on understanding the general principles of cell development and evolution using specialized rooting cells such as rhizoids and root hairs as models.

Professor Jane Langdale

Professor Jane Langdale
Co-Director, Institute on Plants for the 21st Century

Jane graduated from the University of Bath with a BSc in Applied Biology specializing in microbiology. She then went on to do a PhD in Human Genetics and her research interests now focus on the evolution of plant development.

Andrew is responsible for IT & Research Support for the Institute. He has also been working on the development of internet components of BRAHMS, BRAHMS online and related Web Services. The BRAHMS online web site was created to distribute BRAHMS software and to provide online search facilities for groups of BRAHMS databases.(BRAHMS is a powerful and flexible database management system for botanical researchers and herbaria, providing wide-ranging and innovative functionality to assemble, manage, edit, analyse and publish your data).

I work on the documentation and evaluation of plant diversity, especially through the development and implementation of the BRAHMS data storage and analysis system. BRAHMS is used globally to support the management of botanical data and a broad range of botanical research initiatives.

I am a tropical botanist / plant ecologist, concentrating mostly on the interface between the academic and the practical management of tropical biodiversity, particularly in forest and mostly in Africa and the Caribbean.

My research concentrate on the use of molecular markers in evolutionary and conservation biology, especially hybridisation, polyploidy, the evolutionary consequences of human-mediated plant movement and conservation genetics.I am also interested in the problems of using herbarium specimens as a source of DNA for evolutionary studies, and the history of botany.
